The Journey - 7 (40 mn)

Seventh episode

« The Journey » is a 14½ hour documentary film by Peter Watkins, made between the years 1983 and 1985 on several continents, released on film in 1987 at the Toronto Film Festival. It is structured around the theme of nuclear weapons, military spending and poverty. Ordinary people are asked about their awareness of these issues.
Peter Watkins spent eighteen months editing the more than 100 hours of footage he compiled, weaving together extended family interviews, documentation of the global arms race, recollections of survivors of the bombings in Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and Hamburg, community psychodramas of possible disaster scenarios, and works by other artists. The film is monumental both in its critique and analysis and in its effort to inspire and occasion new ways of using information and the media.
This global peace film was produced in 1983-86 by the Swedish Peace & Arbitration Society and local support groups in Sweden, Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand, USSR, Mexico, Japan, Scotland, Polynesia, Mozambique, Denmark, France, Norway, West Germany, with post-production support from the National Film Board in Montreal, Canada.
It was screened at the Mexico City International Festival of Contemporary Cinema (FICCO) in February 2007. Between April 25 and May 1, 2007, all 19 parts of the film were screened at the Austrian Filmmuseum in Vienna.
The 5 DVD box set contains the 19 episodes of the series.

No London Today

« No London Today » is an immersion into the world of five young refugees, Chafik, Aron, Abraham, Henok and Ermias, waiting and wandering in Calais, trying illegally to reach England.
"No london today". That's exactly the words Arman told me the first time I met him. We were sitting on a bench, in the street. I was on holidays in Calais, a city in the north of France, he was waiting for the night to fall, to reach England as a clandestine. That's where this strange trip started, a still trip in another Calais with no beaches, no terraces and no place in the sun.

September 2005. The Israelis are leaving Gaza. But how about the situation in the West Bank ?
Three Palestinian towns dying of confinement and suffocation : Nablus, the rebellious, lively and loud… Hebron, the resigned, empty and silent… Qalqilya, dying… And a giraffe her eyes wide open, with an infinite look of sadness. Closing your eyes or how to open our eyes when they are wide shut
