On the morning of March 18, 1942, after a long train journey through occupied France, young Roland Barthes arrived at the Students' Sanatorium of Saint Hilaire in the Alps. He soon discovered this strange "World above" where the fear of death and the constraints of the treatment combined with the promise of a rebirth. To his friend who remained far away, he narrated this experience, both social and intimate, which deeply shook his being and resonates uniquely with our present.
